The wall Street Journal Review and outlook
Every politician moans that entitlement spending is out of
control, so it ought to be easy at least to stop blatant fraud
and abuse. Evidently not: Congress is currently resisting
an attempt to rein in even a Big Con that everyone acknowledges.
The scene of this crime is Medicaid, the open-ended program
that provides health coverage for about 59 million low-income
people, with the rolls expanding every year. States determine
eligibility and what services to cover, and the feds pick

their federal payouts and dump more of their costs onto taxpayers
nationwide.

too "complex"?
Part I
By thomas Sowell
Some people think that the reason the public misunderstands
so many issues is that these issues are too "complex"

the remaining land far more expensive? Or that houses built
on very expensive land will be very expensive housing?

Your Money: the looting of Medicare
A whopping $70 billion out of the estimated $400 billion
budgeted for Medicare in 2008 may disappear this year due
to fraud and mismanagement. The taxpayer-funded system to
cover health care for Americans aged 65 or older is projected
to lose that amount, which is equivalent to $233 for every
American.

April 18, 2008 David Walker Comptroller General speaks of
potential bankruptcy of America
(CBS) Beginning next year, and for 20 years thereafter, 78
million Americans will become pensioners and medical dependents
of the U.S. taxpayer.
"The first baby boomer will reach 62 and be eligible
for early retirement of Social Security January 1, 2008. They'll
be eligible for Medicare just three years later. And when
those boomers start retiring in mass, then that will be a
tsunami of spending that could swamp our ship of state if
we don't get serious," Walker explains.
